We're contemplating a few possible songs to cover, and i'd like some suggestions from our illustrious, if narrow, online fanbase. Currently up for nomination are
lionel richie - all night long haddaway - what is love? enya - orinoco flow
think also about how could interpret them.
peace

Those are already lol. I love weird and special covers. the Haddaway cover would be a perfect opportunity to do a complete re-think of the song (because it is so repitive), possibly using the sampler to install heroic quantities of glitchy drumloops and throbbing weirdness into the equation and actually having it get more and more manic with loads of stuff, then breaking down - a bit like Sit Down, Stand Up by radiohead at the end.
But also:
Phantom of the Opera from the musical of the same name.
Clearly pretty much straight up with a heavy dash of irony and some riffola. I know this was already touted already, but it should be done. Ditto something by Elvis, probably Suspicious Minds. It might be a bit too obvious to do Phantom and not nearly clever enough - the best covers often work by doing something really different and suprising with the song and a heavy version of this might be a bit rubbish. That said the version of crazy in love you and theo was good. But the version of Hey Yah rates in my list of best covers ever.
Shakespeare's Sister - Stay
This would be my ultimate cover version I'd like you to do. It's actually a very beautiful song. The quiet early bit could be done very serious mentality, possibly only by Theo as he has the higher range. Then Jack could lay waste to the earth on the "You'd better hope and pray" heavy bit. It kind of avoids the previous obviousness criticism by being one of those songs everyone knows and likes, but they will have not heard for a long time.
Something by Nick Cave. Up to you. The Mercy Seat is pretty unhinged, but i don't know if it could be done well differently.
Something by Bjork. This would be a tough one and would require a better take on it than the "make it loud" thing most people would do.
Perhaps a more interesting thing would be to cover something like a Nina Simone or Billie Holiday song and do it well in a modern context. This wouldn't be at all ironic, of course.
A rap song really radically re-contextualised. I heard a singer songwriter do a cover of NWA and it was absolutely sublime.
A cover of a Talk Less, Say More song.
I'll give it some further thought.

OH YES.
I just thought - something by Bowie - life on mars, something not obvious, but really good? Rock and Roll Suicide?
PS
Whatever covers you do, record them, even if it is a home done thing or a live board recording. Coz I really want to hear!

I think Stay by Shakespeare's Sister is the most Butterfly song to cover.

Yo, Alex has told me to suggest 'Running Up That Hill (Make a Deal With God)' by Kate Bush. That's not a bad idea.
